I want to welcome you to our Morning Prayer with Colored Pencils: Making a Mandala — Saturday, June 17, 2017 9:30-Noon at The Well. This Mandala workshop is designed to enhance your spirit and engage your soul in creativity, expression, play and community. It might be described as a “spa” for the spirit.

“The experience of Making a Mandala (Sacred Circle)
is trusting the wisdom of your soul, letting it emerge
in form and color and gathering it into a circle like a jewel.”
—Mary Southard, CSJ

A Mandala is a sanskrit word meaning sacred circle and can represent the Universe.

Creating a Mandala is a meditative and creative process that cultivates the essence of our being. When one is rooted in the deepest part of the self & the experience of our sacred connection to all of life, then one can experience the joy and freedom of being fully alive…in the flow…in the moment.

One of the first Christian Saints to create Mandalas was Hildegard of Bingen, a Benedictine Abbess of the 11th century. Hildegard was a mystic that expressed some of her revelations “Visions” in the form of a Mandala. She received understanding of Creation as the Oneness that recent Scientific findings are telling us about in this century. She was a woman before her time, that trusted her insights and had the courage to express them. Her approach to life was to be a “Feather on the Breath of God.”

When making a Mandala, I find it inspiring to hold this idea; that my hand and the pencils are the feather, and the Spirits inspiration is the the “air that bears it along”. To remind myself to be open and in a state of receptivity, as I receive the gift of symbols or imagery that shows up on the paper.

Creating a Mandala is like Meditation or Centering Prayer with Colored Pencils. You are led through a guided meditation to remind you of your place of belonging in the Creation Story. The artist and non-artist alike will find it easy to create. Stencils are provided, to make it easy to create with images.
