Environmental Racism is the unequal distribution of environmental hazards and resources based on race. This term was coined by Dr. Benjamin Chavis Jr. in 1982. It has been referred to as the ‘New Jim Crow’. In Rev. Dr. Robert Spicer’s lecture, Healing our Land-Aspirational Justice: A solution to Environmental Racism in our times, Rev. Dr. Spicer will share the philosophy of Aspirational Justice and its four constructs ie. Truth Telling, the Symbolic, the Institutional and the Tangible. He will then discuss how Aspirational Justice is a direct response to the four manifestation of Environmental Justice–placement of polluting facilities, lack of representation, lack of accountability, cost benefit analysis.

Rev. Dr. Robert Spicer is principal consultant with Restorative Strategies®, LLC. Dr. Spicer consults with school districts throughout the US on how to create “Ecosystems of Care”. Dr. Spicer is currently an Adjunct Professor at Loyola University Chicago where he teaches a course entitled ‘Restorative Justice in Schools. Robert’s former role was with Chicago Public schools as the first Culture and Climate Coordinator in a US school district. It was there that he developed his Restorative Strategies® training and workshops modules for schools and community partners. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his work and has been featured on major news outlets such as the CNN, AP News and Huffington Post. He is the author of Aspirational Justice: A Pathway toward Healing and Reconciliation and his children’s book, ‘What are Circles for? Dr. Spicer and his family live in Chicago, IL.
