Long before the term "spiritual" became common, Francis of Assisi embodied its deepest meaning, while also being religious in the best sense of the word. We are drawn to him because he restored religion to its proper place: the human heart, where it can transform everyday life. The 36 ways of experiencing God that author Jon Sweeney has identified from early Franciscan sources show that anyone can follow Francis's example. These practices will be explored through presentation, participation, reflection, and discussion. Examples of these early Franciscan spiritual practices include “freeing captive creatures,” “praying alone at night,” “allowing yourself to weep,” “standing between those who fight,” and “praying ‘Who are you, God? And who am I?’” On this 800th anniversary year of St. Francis’ death and Jubilee Year of St. Francis, Jon will introduce these ways of experiencing God and offer parallels from many other spiritual teachers, such as Thich Nhat Hanh, Abraham Joshua Heschel, and Mary Oliver. Facilitator Jon M. Sweeney is an award-winning author and independent scholar. In addition to his books on Dominican mystic Meister Eckhart coauthored with Mark S. Burrows, Jon is the author of a book on Thomas Merton and several books on Franciscan spirituality. Jon […] |

Our faith tells us that the world matters very much. When we talk about “the Catholic vote,” often we mean being pro-life or perhaps we are thinking about an orientation toward social justice. When we think in those ways, we usually mean that somebody else is wrong about an important issue so we have to win. But faith should tell us something different. We should be a little suspicious about the idea that politics holds the key to ending abortion or addressing poverty. Worse, thinking that way tends to cause divisions more than it solves problems. Prof. Steven Millies explores the idea of incorporating our faith into our civic lives by considering how we vote instead of how we vote. It seems wrong to think in terms of party, or a particular issue, or any expected outcome to define “the Catholic vote” or even the vote of a person of faith. There is no party that should suit the faithful. Weighing issues and the most effective ways to address them is a matter of prudence, and people of faith almost always can reach different judgments about them. There is no election outcome that will bring forth the reign of God once and for all. Elections do not solve […] |
