OUR EVOLVING REGION
THREE ONE-DAY FIELD TRIPS
Friday, Aug 10
Midewin National Tallgrass Prairie
We Midwesterners often think that we have to travel far away to the mountains or the ocean or a national park to be awed by nature. But we have a lot to be in awe of, wonder about right in our own backyard. These three nature centers have been selected to represent the diversity and expansiveness of our beautiful region.
At each location a naturalist will help us understand features of the plants, animals, water, soil, topography and local climate – and help us experience how these living beings and systems work together as a whole.
We will see concepts of evolution brought to life: from ice age formations and plant succession, to the reintroduction of bison in a restored prairie. As we experience the intricate interdependencies and constant adaptations of the fen, prairie and dunes, we will have opportunities to reflect on our own human capacity within this rapidly changing time in which we live.
